Today, at least one out of every six North Americans suffer from a compromised immune system due to one or more food sensitivities.  One of the major functions of our immune system is to protect our bodies from foreign invaders such as undigested food proteins.

With food sensitivities, the foreign invaders are undigested food proteins called allergens. Allergens are so called because they induce an allergic reaction, or an exaggerated immune response. The immune system has a variety of attack methods, including antibodies. Antibodies function to neutralize toxic materials and remove allergens. The symptoms you experience are your body’s way of telling you about these reactions that are occurring.

Food sensitivities are of great concern because most people, and many medical practitioners, still do not attribute symptoms of poor or degenerating health to food.

What are the symptoms of food sensitivities?

The symptoms of any food intolerance vary greatly.  The following is a good representation but is not a complete list of food sensitivity signs and symptoms.

Abdominal cramping, bloating, belching, gas, loose stools, constipation, anxiety, hyperactivity, joint inflammation and pain, muscle pain,  PMS, nasal congestion, hives, eczema, psoriasis, other skin conditions, cravings, general fatigue and low energy, headaches and nausea.

It is important to note that supplementation to relieve symptoms of any disease, without licensed medical diagnosis and supervision, will not address the root cause of illness and may lead to further aggravation and harm.

How do I know I am experiencing a food sensitivity?

Clinical exam and history taking, as well as laboratory testing, are all very important. My role is integral for understanding, prioritizing diagnoses, ruling-out possible underlying causes, interpreting test results, and filtering information. I help direct treatment that will prevent further outbreaks.

What methods are used in identifying food sensitivities?

Blood Testing

Food sensitivities can be identified by drawing a small sample of your blood. The blood is then processed and sent to a lab for evaluation.  ELISA is the most accurate lab analysis used when evaluating food sensitivities.  Results take about 5 days to return to our office.

What happens after the offending foods have been identified?

Once you have been tested and the offending foods discovered, we will assist you with the next stages of treatment.

Will I be able to eat “eliminated” foods again?

Yes, with successful treatment you will be able to once again eat the foods you were sensitive to in the past.  Times range from three weeks to eight months, or until symptoms have regressed or ceased.

If you think you may have food sensitivities and want to book a blood test, please call the clinic at 705.431.0859.  Also please call us if you would like a free 20 minute consult to discuss other issues that concern you.
